Sally and Don Goodrich are the founders of the Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation. Their son Peter was killed on September 11, 2001. The foundation works primarily in Afghanistan to support education and address the fundamental needs of fragile populations. It also supports long-term exchange students to the U.S. They will discuss their work with foundation and answer questions.

Asadullah S. and Dr. David Edwards, Professor of Anthropology and Afghan scholar, Williams College, will also be participating in the program.

The public is invited to this free forum.

Book Discussion of The Kite Runner

Tuesday, March 11, 2008, Union College

Sixty-seven 10th grade students from Schenectady High School's International Baccalaureate program and students from Union College discussed The Kite Runner, at Union College.  Angela Blair, Ass’t. Director for Community Outreach at the college, and three teachers from Schenectady High (Mary Hamilton, Rosaline Horowitz, and Amy Snyder) were organizing the discussion.  After the discussion, students had lunch and a tour of the campus as well. 

This event is not open to the public.

Photojournalist Connie Frisbee Houde talked about her experiences as a photojournalist in Afghanistan and with Afghans in America. This presentation was a combination of stories, poetry, music and photographs from Afghanistan combined with interviews from some of the over 3,000 Afghans living in the Capital District area.

Col. Max H. Della Pia and SSgt. Jared Semerad from New York Air National Guard discussed their experiences during their deployment to Afghanistan. The presentation included narrative and photos, followed by a Q&A period.

Veterans and survivors from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan would be sharing the stories they wrote in the Memoir Writing Workshop series facilitated by Susannah Risley.
