Project Hope Donation Guidelines | Donation Form | Shipping Directions |
Previous One County, One Book programs have included a service project to benefit others. This year we have selected the Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation in Bennington, Vermont as the group we will partner with for our project. The Foundation was established by Sally and Don Goodrich, in memory of their son Peter who died on September 11, 2001. Peter’s parents believe that educating young Afghan children is paramount to eradicating root causes of violence and terrorism. The following donated items will benefit a school, orphanage and health clinic in the Wardak region of Afghanistan. To protect the recipients of the school supply items or clothing, we ask that you do not include items with American or Western language or graphics. Please follow the guidelines provided by the Foundation:

| Sally and Don Goodrich, of Bennington, VT, whose son Peter died aboard the second airplane to hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, founded the The Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation. Through the foundation Sally and Don started the Afghanistan School Alliance. They raised more than $230,000 to construct a girls’ school in the province of Logar, about 30 miles south of the capital Kabul. Construction of the new school began in April 2005 and was completed in January 2006 when the school was conveyed to the government. The school serves some 500 girls from seven villages in Logar province. The Foundation’s most recent projects at the school involve piping clean water into a kitchen and building a septic system. Past undertakings include supplementing teachers’ salaries, purchasing stoves, wood and coal to heat the school through winter, augmenting school supplies and repairing the building. In addition the Foundation contributes to the support of 52 orphans, two schools and a health clinic in the province of Wardak. It is in the process of acquiring arable land in a different province to grow crops for sale to support the orphans and schools. This land will also serve as an alternative site to house the orphans if security deteriorates. A second Wardak project involves purchasing sheep and cows for food and income. Planning for a library in Bamyan province is underway with Asadullah and WADAN, the Foundation’s Non-Governmental Organization in Afghanistan. Finally, eight Afghan students are being supported by the Foundation in various ways as they undertake long-term study in the U.S. | |||||||||||||
