The Schenectady County Public Library's third One County, One Book (OCOB) community reads program ran from March 1 to April 20, 2008.  In October, county citizens voted to select the highly acclaimed Khaled Hosseini novel, The Kite Runner, whose film version appeared in local theatres and was shown at the library in early April.  A “community read” program seeked to encourage a county – wide dialogue on the many issues found in the story.  The Kite Runner provided a great opportunity to explore the history, culture, politics and future of the ancient country of Afghanistan.  The themes of prejudice, family, friendship,

betrayal and redemption resonated as universal concerns.  The setting of the story provided an easy connection to current affairs affecting our country and the world. A committee of OCOB community volunteers, along with members of the library staff, planned events and activities to celebrate and support a community-wide reading The Kite Runner

and discussion of this book.
